Building Surveying Apprenticeship

How do you survey and plan for the construction of an embassy on one of the world’s most isolated islands? How do you ensure the integrity of 18th Century government buildings, making them safe working spaces for colleagues and the public? It’s all part of the Building Surveying Higher Apprenticeship at FCO Services. The programme is open to everyone from school-leavers to career-changers, offering a competitive salary, paid BSc degree studies, and perhaps most importantly, hands-on training gained through live government projects, taking you all over the world as you learn.

But who are we?
You may not know FCO Services yet, but we work with government-level customers to protect the UK’s interests at home and overseas. We do that through a wide range of services, all delivered to the highest security standards, including construction, digital solutions, communications, logistics, and counter-eavesdropping.

So what will you do?
Throughout your programme, you’ll be working on live projects for our government customers, taking on increasing levels of responsibility as you go. Based at King Charles Street, London, and travelling to sites worldwide, you’ll work with professional Engineers, Surveyors, and Project Managers on a wide variety of projects. You could be surveying a potential building site and completing a feasibility study in Asia. You could be building sustainability into plans for a secure government site in Africa. Or you could be inspecting the roof of a government building right here in the UK. It’s diverse work, offering a richer, more thorough kind of training.

At the same time, you’ll be studying towards your BSc in Building Surveying. You’ll study the theory and the principals behind the work you’re doing day to day, with plenty of projects and exams to test your knowledge. By the end, with our support, you’ll graduate with a well-rounded practical and theoretical expertise – and we’ll even support you in applying for membership to professional bodies. Plus, we’ll do all we can to help you find a permanent position here, whether it’s in the UK or with our overseas teams.

In short, you’ll build your skills, make a difference and widen your options – all with the benefits of a career in the Civil Service. So we think it’s fair to say your world just got bigger.

What we look for
Our Building Surveying apprenticeship is open to everyone, but you must:

• Be a British Citizen who’s lived in the UK for the last three years before the first day of your apprenticeship (usually September of the year you apply), and for at least five of the last 10 years
• Have at least one of the following:
– A minimum of three A Levels or equivalent, at grades BBB
– BTEC National Diploma DDM
– Access to HE qualification with at least 24 credits at Distinction and 21 credits at Merit
– Equivalent Level 3 qualifications worth 128 UCAS points (or 320 UCAS points if gained pre-2017)
• Hold 5 GCSEs (or equivalent e.g. O Level, Standard Grade) at grade 9-5 including English and Maths
• Be genuinely interested in Building Surveying.

If you already have a qualification at the same or a higher level, you may not be able to apply unless the apprenticeship qualification provides learning and skills that are materially different to what you’ve studied before.

It takes a diverse team to protect a diverse world.
The vital work we do takes an incredible community of colleagues, with different skills, backgrounds, cultures and identities. We support every one of them, so they always know they’re welcome and valued. It’s what makes us a Disability Confident employer, Stonewall Diversity Champions, and a member of Employers for Carers - and it’s how you know you’re joining an inspiring, inclusive organisation.

Your salary
Your starting salary will be £18,611 plus £5,000 location allowance and we offer pay progression at key milestones during the apprenticeship. If you’re offered a permanent position on completion of the apprenticeship programme, the final salary would be in the region of £31,018 plus £5,000 location allowance.

All our employees have to be security cleared before joining us, so you will need to undergo a vetting process if you’re successful in your application. This role would require you to undergo Security Check (SC) clearance. You can find out more about vetting on the apprentice ‘How to apply page’ on this site or by searching vetting.
