Building Services Engineering Apprenticeship

Find out what it takes to design and maintain secure government sites. Learn how to design safe and energy-efficient facilities for buildings at the heart of the nation. Whether you’re a school-leaver or career-changer, or you’ve just got an active interest in engineering, our programme will see you reach new heights, earning your degree while you get practical experience worldwide, working on buildings from embassies to high commissions. In short, it’s paid studies, a competitive salary, and the kind of experience that will turn you into a respected professional in your field.

But who are we?
You may not know FCO Services yet, but we work with government-level customers to protect the UK’s interests at home and overseas. We do that through a wide range of services, all delivered to the highest security standards, including construction, digital solutions, communications, logistics, and counter-eavesdropping.

So what will you do?
Throughout your programme, you’ll be working on live projects for our government customers, taking on increasing levels of responsibility as you go. Based at King Charles Street, London, and travelling to sites worldwide, you’ll work with professional Engineers, Surveyors, and Project Managers on a wide variety of projects. It means you’ll pick up skills in everything from utility design for 18th century embassies, through to air conditioning unit requirements for secure government server rooms, and you’ll learn how to deliver it all end-to-end.

At the same time, you’ll be studying towards your BEng in Building Services Engineering. You’ll study the theory and the principals behind the work you’re doing day to day, with plenty of projects and exams to test your knowledge. By the end, with our support, you’ll graduate with a well-rounded practical and theoretical expertise – and we’ll even support you in applying for membership to professional bodies, or registration with the Engineering Council. Plus, we’ll do all we can to help you find a permanent position here, whether it’s in the UK or with our overseas teams.

In short, you’ll build your skills, make a difference and widen your options – all with the benefits of a career in the Civil Service. So we think it’s fair to say your world just got bigger.

What we look for
Our Building Services Engineering apprenticeship is open to everyone, but you must:

• Be a British Citizen who’s lived in the UK for the last three years before the first day of your apprenticeship (usually September of the year you apply), and for at least five of the last 10 years
• Have at least one of the following:
o A minimum of three A Levels or equivalent, at grades A*-C, including Maths and a Physical Science (either Physics or Chemistry)
o BTEC National Diploma in a relevant field
o Relevant Level 3 apprenticeship
• Hold a minimum of two GCSEs (or equivalent e.g. O Level, Standard Grade) at grade 9-5 (A*-C) in English and Maths
• Be genuinely interested in Building Services Engineering.

If you already have a qualification at the same or a higher level, you may not be able to apply unless the apprenticeship qualification provides learning and skills that are materially different to what you’ve studied before.

It takes a diverse team to protect a diverse world.
The vital work we do takes an incredible community of colleagues, with different skills, backgrounds, cultures and identities. We support every one of them, so they always know they’re welcome and valued. It’s what makes us a Disability Confident employer, Stonewall Diversity Champions, and a member of Employers for Carers - and it’s how you know you’re joining an inspiring, inclusive organisation.

Your salary
Your starting salary will be £18,611 plus £5,000 location allowance and we offer pay progression at key milestones during the apprenticeship. If you’re offered a permanent position on completion of the apprenticeship programme, the final salary would be in the region of £31,018 plus £5,000 location allowance.

All our employees have to be security cleared before joining us, so you will need to undergo a vetting process if you’re successful in your application. This role would require you to undergo Security Check (SC) clearance. You can find out more about vetting on the apprentice ‘How to apply page’ on this site or by searching vetting.

Colour Blindness
Candidates invited to the assessment centre will be asked to undertake a colour blindness test, since distinguishing between different colours of electrical wire will be a critical part of your role.
