Security Design Engineering Apprenticeship

Whether it’s designing the CCTV network that protects an embassy overseas, or planning for the intruder detection system that will safeguard a government building right here in the UK, the work of our Security Design Engineering degree apprentices keeps government sites and buildings safe and secure all over the world. Ready to be part of that? Our programme is open to school-leavers and career-changers alike, with the chance for a competitive salary, worldwide travel, paid degree studies, and hands-on work on life government projects.

But who are we?
You may not know FCO Services yet, but we work with government-level customers to protect the UK’s interests at home and overseas. We do that through a wide range of services, all delivered to the highest security standards, including construction, digital solutions, communications, logistics, and counter-eavesdropping.

So what will you do?
Throughout your programme, you’ll be working on live projects for our government customers, taking on increasing levels of responsibility as you go. Based at Hanslope Park, Milton Keynes, and travelling to sites worldwide, you’ll work with professional Engineers, Surveyors, and Project Managers on a wide variety of projects. It might be planning security doors that let people in and out of a major government building in North America. Designing failsafe security systems for countries where power infrastructure can be unreliable. Or thinking about a CCTV network that covers every inch of a government compound in Europe. It’s all part of your hands-on practical training – and every new project adds to a programme full of rich experience.

At the same time, you’ll be studying towards your BEng (Hons) degree in Embedded Electronic Systems Design and Development. You’ll study the theory and the principals behind the work you’re doing day to day, with plenty of projects and exams to test your knowledge. By the end, with our support, you’ll graduate with a well-rounded practical and theoretical expertise – and we’ll even support you in applying for membership to professional bodies, or even registration with the Engineering Council. Plus, we’ll do all we can to help you find a permanent position here, whether it’s in the UK or with our overseas teams.

In short, you’ll build your skills, make a difference and widen your options – all with the benefits of a career in the Civil Service. So we think it’s fair to say your world just got bigger.

What we look for
Our Security Design Engineering apprenticeship is open to everyone, but you must:

• Be a British Citizen who’s lived in the UK for the last three years before the first day of your apprenticeship (usually September of the year you apply), and for at least five of the last 10 years
• Have at least one of the following:
– A minimum of three A Levels or equivalent, at grades BBB, including Maths and one other related STEM subject, e.g. Physics, IT, Computing or Electronics
– BTEC National Diploma DDM
– An Access to HE qualifications with at least 24 credits at Distinction and 21 credits at Merit, including 3 Distinctions in Maths and 3 Merits in Physics
– Equivalent Level 3 qualifications worth 128 UCAS points (or 320 UCAS points if gained pre-2017) which must include Maths or a Physical Science subject.
• Hold five GCSEs (or equivalent e.g. O Level, Standard Grade) at grade 9-5 including English and Maths
• be genuinely interested in Security Design Engineering.

If you already have a qualification at the same or a higher level, you may not be able to apply unless the apprenticeship qualification provides learning and skills that are materially different to what you’ve studied before.

It takes a diverse team to protect a diverse world.
The vital work we do takes an incredible community of colleagues, with different skills, backgrounds, cultures and identities. We support every one of them, so they always know they’re welcome and valued. It’s what makes us a Disability Confident employer, Stonewall Diversity Champions, and a member of Employers for Carers - and it’s how you know you’re joining an inspiring, inclusive organisation.

Your salary
Your starting salary will be £18,611 plus £1,750 location allowance and we offer pay progression at key milestones during the apprenticeship. If you’re offered a permanent position on completion of the apprenticeship programme, the final salary would be in the region of £31,018 plus £1,750 location allowance.

Vetting
All our employees have to be security cleared before joining us, so you will need to undergo a vetting process if you’re successful in your application. This role would require you to undergo Security Check (SC) clearance. You can find out more about vetting on the apprentice ‘How to apply page’ on this site or by searching Gov.uk vetting.
